Diagnosis and Treatment for Eye Cataract

Eye cataract is very easy to detect with a white spot visible even to the naked eye. Once you visit the doctor, a thorough examination will be done to determine the severity of the cataract and to decide the course of the treatment. The doctor may conduct several tests, including:

  • Retinal exam: The doctor will examine your retina to ascertain the damage in the eye due to cataract. The examination is conducted through opthalmoscope which confirms the severity of the cataract.
  • Eyesight test: The doctor will conduct eye test to determine the effect of cataract on eyesight. The doctor will show you a chart with letters written on it and will ask you to read the letters first with bare eyes and then with the use of lens. It will help the doctor in determining if you have 20/20 vision or if your vision shows signs of impairment.
  • Slit-lamp examination: The doctor will use a microscope which helps in giving the real picture of your eye and its anomalies. The microscope will be placed in front of your eyes, the doctor will ask you to focus on the opening from where a line of light will lighten your cornea, iris, lens and space between your iris and cornea.

Eye cataract is a very common eye problem and the procedure takes just half an hour-one hour of time. The objective is to remove the cloud covering on the lens and replacing it with an artificial lens to improve the vision of the patient. Usually, an intraocular lens is placed in the place of your natural lens. The process of placing the intraocular lens is also referred to as aphakic surgery.

How is Intraocular lens is implanted in place of the natural lens?

The doctors will administer the surgery with highly sophisticated instruments. The first step is to remove the cloud covering or the cataract which has covered your natural lens. After it is successfully removed, the intraocular lens or IOL is implanted in place of the natural lens through a very tiny incision. The lens is made of silicone or acrylic material which is very flexible just like the natural lens and fits easily in the eye replacing the natural lens.

After the surgery, you will be advised to wear the black glasses which will be covered with a flap on both the sides to prevent light going directly in to the eye.
