How do I know if I am suffering from any eye ailment?

We do not visit a doctor until we any disease hit us or we hit any injury. But in case of eyes, regular eye check-ups are must. Eyes are very sensitive part of our body and are prone to infections if proper care is not done. Any kind of persistent itching, burning sensation, redness or blurry vision is a clear indication of any eye infection. You can visit your doctor who will examine your eye for any infection or disease which needs appropriate treatment to be followed.

What Kind of disease can affect my eye-sight?

Any infection which is left untreated or is treated by overt-the-counter medicine may spread in the entire eye leading to major infection. Therefore, it is always advised to consult a doctor when any kind of itching or burning sensation does not go away. Other than deteriorating eye-sight, conjunctivitis and other seasonal eye infections, there are different eye problems which are quite severe and need surgical intervention as well. At Aakash, we not only offer effective consultancy but also treat different eye problems, like:

  • Eye-cataract: eye cataract is one of the most common eye problems in India and is easily treatable with a minor surgery. A cataract is generally a clouding of the lenses in your eyes and is usually diagnosed in older people. A white or black spot develops in the eye lens affecting eye-sight. It can already be removed by a surgery.
  • Cross Eyes or Squint: Generally the eye lens should be placed in the centre of the eye but in some people the position of the lens is slightly deformed giving an impression of cross eyed.
  • Nystagmus: Nystagmus is an issue where your lens keeps moving left to right as if it is trembling.
  • Dry Eyes: Sometimes, eyes stop producing enough good-quality tears to keep the eyes moist resulting in dryness in eyes. If not treated it may lead to some loss of vision as well.
  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma refers to any kind of damage to the optic nerve of the eyes which may be caused by any accident affecting the eyes, any eye disorder or blockage in any blood vessel around the eyes.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: If you are a diabetic then your eyes are prone to infections and possible damage to blood vessels around the eyes.
  • Macular Degeneration: It is an age-related disorder wherein the retina starts to degenerate.
  • Eyelid Problem: Sometimes eyelids may face blinking spasms or inflamed outer edges which may be caused by normal wear & tear and can be treated by medical intervention.
  • Corneal Disease: Cornea is the dome-shaped part of at the front of your eyes. If you are facing redness, pain, reduced vision along with halo effect and watery eyes then you need to visit your doctor for a possibility of cornea damage.
  • What is a good eye-sight?

We know numbers like +5 or -2, when we talk about eye-sight. An eye-specialist examines our eye and prescribes lenses in case our eye number has increased or decreased. Our eye power is usually measured with a Snellen chart which is uniform globally. A normal vision is 20/20.

When should I visit an eye specialist or an Ophthalmologist?

Not every problem related to eye is cured by eye drops. You must regularly get your eyes examined and should consult your doctor in case of any persistent itching, redness or pain in the eyes.
